Running and Keeping Your Back Healthy
Running is an excellent choice for maintaining a fitness routine. It is important to know how to run correctly in order to keep your back healthy and avoid back pain. Running compresses the joints and discs in your back because of the force of impact with every step. Make a conscious effort to run with a smooth stride by rolling your feet. This will greatly reduce the force of impact and the amount of pain you may have in your back. Running on soft surfaces also helps ease the force of impact. Good quality running shoes are a must! You might have to try on several pairs to find the right fit for you.Additional information can be found at http://massageandmind.wordpress.com/2011/04/23/better-posture/. Be sure there is plenty of padding and support. Some runners add cushioned insoles which helps minimize the force of impact on your joints and discs. The muscles in your back help you remain in an upright position, so you should be mindful of your posture during your run. Strengthening your core by doing lunges and abdominal crunches will allow the back to keep your body in an upright position and not hunched over. Good posture allows you to run more easily without the extra weight on your back from being hunched over. Finally, learn to relax your arms and shoulders while running. Let your arms hang naturally and don’t keep your shoulders up. Your back muscles may become tight from holding your shoulders up which will create back pain. With the proper shoes and proper technique, running will be much more enjoyable and will help reduce the risk of back injury and pain. As always, consult your physician before beginning a running program or any exercise routine.
